Extra costs to plan for

Some jobs need extra work. We list it separately on your quote so you can see exactly what you're paying for.

Old tank removal and disposal (on its own)Drained, removed and recycledPrice on survey
New pipework and fire valvePer job, depends on distance to the boilerPrice on survey

What affects the price?

  • Tank size and type. Bunded tanks cost more than single skin, and fire protected tanks cost more again, but they can sit closer to buildings and boundaries.
  • The base. The tank must sit on a level, non-combustible base extending 300 mm beyond it on every side. A sound existing base keeps the cost down.
  • Access. Tanks lifted over walls or carried along narrow side passages take more labour.
  • Pipework. A longer run to the boiler, or a new fire valve and filter, adds cost.
  • Position. If the old tank breaks the siting rules (1.8 m from buildings and flues, 760 mm from boundaries), the new one may need to go somewhere else.

What's included in our replacement price

  • Free site survey and risk assessment
  • Pumping your oil into clean holding tanks and filtering it back into the new tank
  • Removal, disposal and recycling of the old tank and any contaminated waste
  • A new valve and filter, and reconnection of pipework
  • A wireless electronic oil level gauge
  • Restarting the boiler, testing for air locks and leaving the site tidy

Oil tank cost questions

How much does it cost to replace an oil tank?

The price depends on the tank size and type, whether you need a new base, access, and any new pipework. The tables on this page show our typical installed prices, and we give a fixed quote after a free site survey.

How long does an oil tank replacement take?

Most domestic replacements are done in one day once the base is ready. We pump your oil into holding tanks, remove the old tank, install the new one and refill it with your filtered fuel, so you're only without heating for a few hours.

Do I lose the oil in my old tank?

No. We transfer usable oil to clean holding tanks, separate it from water and sludge, and filter it back into your new tank.

How long does an oil tank last?

Most domestic oil tanks have a working life of around 20 years. Have the tank inspected every year with your boiler service, and replace it if it shows cracks, bulging, corrosion or leaks.

Do I need a bunded tank?

Usually, yes. A bunded tank is required if it holds over 2,500 litres, is within 10 m of controlled water or 50 m of a borehole or spring, could leak into a drain, or supplies more than a single home. We confirm this during the survey.
